Ice Rink Winter Startup Checklist for Owners and Clubs

A winter opening date is a business commitment, not just a calendar reminder. Before scheduling lessons, club sessions or family skating, make sure the people responsible for the rink agree on what is ready and what still needs attention.

This owner-focused checklist helps organize a service visit. It is not a substitute for your equipment manufacturer's startup procedure or a technician's assessment.

1. Identify the equipment and the responsible parties

Collect chiller model and serial numbers, the number of units, available manuals and the last service report. Note whether the rink builder, property manager or owner authorizes repairs. If a builder coordinates your service, involve them before booking another contractor.

2. Review last season's unresolved work

Separate completed repairs from recommendations. An old report saying a controller, compressor or pump needs attention does not prove the problem remains unresolved today. Ask for the completion record and current operating condition rather than assuming.

3. Explain how the system was left

Tell the technician when the rink last operated, who handled shutdown, whether piping was disconnected and whether any work occurred over the summer. Do not energize equipment simply to see what happens if the system's readiness is uncertain.

4. Document visible concerns safely

From a safe, accessible position, note visible leakage, unusual sounds previously observed and displayed alarms. Do not open electrical panels, bypass controls, add unidentified fluid or adjust refrigerant components. Photograph accessible equipment labels only if it is safe.

5. Plan the visit before opening day

Give the contractor your target opening date and any restricted access hours. Allow room for diagnosis, a separate repair approval and parts availability. A diagnostic appointment is not a promise that the rink will be ready by a specific date.

6. Ask for a clear handoff

Request findings, recommended actions, any operating restrictions and the next review date. Keep the report with the equipment record so the next service call starts with facts.

A truly professional team. They quickly identified the issue, ordered the part, and had everything installed within a week. Aleem, the technician assigned to us, was excellent—he managed the entire process seamlessly from beginning to end. It’s reassuring to work with people who clearly know what they’re doing.

Yukos Mechanical Inc. installed a geothermal HVAC system in my home back in 2010, and they’ve been maintaining it ever since to ensure it runs smoothly.
Their team is always on time, professional, and respectful during every service visit.
In the summer of 2020, when the system had its only issue in over a decade, they worked diligently to identify the problem and had it fixed within 24 hours. It’s been running perfectly ever since.

Fast service and very fair pricing for a new A/C and water heater installation at my home. Both units were installed in just one day.
